METROPOLIS Hosts Sustainability Lab Leadership Summit During NeoCon

METROPOLIS hosted a Leadership Summit on June 10 at the Sustainability Lab during NeoCon, bringing together representatives from industry associations and A&D firms to discuss a more sustainable future for interior design.

Leaders from ACT, AIA, Aquafil, ASID, Bentley Mills, BIFMA, CannonDesign, CIDA, Cosentino, Florida State University, Framery, Hickok Cole, HKS, HMC Architects, HOK, IA Interior Architects, IDC, IIDA, ILFI, Impact Acoustics, Interface, Mahlum, Material Bank, mindful MATERIALS, NYSID, Perkins Eastman, Perkins&Will, Shimoda Design, SmithGroup, Ultrafabrics, Wallcoverings Association, and Gensler took the opportunity to reconvene and reflect on the goals and ideas that surfaced during last year’s inaugural summit, contemplate industry progress, and continue the conversation around the key obstacles in designing for climate, health, and equity.

Attendees received updates from the frontlines, with AIA, ASID, IIDA, IDC, and mindfulMATERIALS all providing updates on their respective organization’s latest efforts. The group discussed myriad challenges facing the industry including: how to support the interior designers in prioritizing sustainability; how associations and professionals can collaborate to better address the gaps in our sustainability tools, pledges, and commitments; the missing pieces in sustainable interior design practice; where we need to develop new expertise and resources; and how our organizations can help share information and resources with all stakeholders, including designers and architects manufacturers, dealers, real estate professionals, developers, clients, operators, and owners.

The group spoke passionately about the critical role of education and collaboration in transforming industry mindsets, approaches, and business models. The Summit was organized in partnership with Aquafil Group, Bentley Mills, Cosentino, Framery, Impact Acoustics, Interface, Material Bank, and Ultrafabrics, with representatives from the companies bringing the perspectives of product and material brands to the discussion.
